War. One side is fighting in the name of their 'God'. The other side is fighting both pre-emptively and defensively, in the name of their corrupt and cowardly leader. No one is spared the death or horrors, not even the women and children.
Assuming the massive mongrel army is defeated, considering how much of their population has been conscripted and how many of their villages will be wiped out, I have to wonder how many mongrels will be left. Will there be enough to continue their race? For that matter, will their be enough Dalai to continue their race?
I predict that, by the end of the story, the city of Dar-Dalai will be nothing but a smoking ruin.

Hmm... I just thought of something: Perhaps Tyranos will get sickeningly close to achieving his goal of penetrating the planet and digging out the Traveler? Perhaps he will manage to cobble together the drilling machine and get off a test shot? And, maybe, this will result in one or two major undersea volcanoes starting to form a new continent? Heck, it might even stop their perpetual superstorm.
I'm just wondering out loud if Tyranos' actions could unintentionally have positive effects on the planet. Considering how little landmass they have, a new continent would help tremendously, esp. if it would separate the warring races.

Noemi mentioned all the negative effects. But, with the exception of creating a new continent, I don't know if drilling a giant hole and dumping the waste into the ocean and atmosphere could have too many positive effects. But you do get some more answers later on in this chapter, pages 344 - 347.

The Leung are probably be more like Greek phalanx who were highly trained professional soldiers. I think her second guess is closer to the truth.

Or, Tyranos is giving his machine a serious workout, programming the peasants with advanced battle tactics.
Or, maybe the phalanx is the ruse, made up of peasants, and the real army is sneaking into place with mass produced firearms. Considering how long he's been on Celebus, Tyranos could've produced an arsenal full of firearms by himself!

the Russia was the best at the burned earth tactics but I think their own farmers hated it. I think they didn't kill so many but all food was gone for an invading force...

They definitely were. The big difference was that Peter the Great, during the Swedish invasion of Russia, only scattered the livestock and hid the food instead of destroying it. By doing this he starved the Swedish forces in the winter and cut them from 40k down to 24k, ensuring an easy victory.
