If they recognize the Mag Cheng alert to their presence and Liam recognizes that the narrow up ahead would be a bad place to get ambushed, wouldn't it make strategic sense to stop the boat?
Even if they don't have an anchor, all they have to do is stop rowing. They are rowing upstream, after all. No doubt they will come for them. Better to let the enemy come to you on your terms.

I think they would just sit there and wait if it is an ambush. I would try to get some momentum so you can duck down when the darts start flying. If you stop you're just a sitting target, at least that's what I'm thinking.
