It's simple, you just don't count things. I know a man that solved that kind of things easily while working. A sample conversation with him:
- How many tiles do you need to complete the job?
- A truck.
- That many? Won't there be many leftover?
- Then I'll take them back.
- What if you need more?
- Then I'll request another truck.
Since trucks don't apply here it would translate as:
- How many XXX do you need?
- A few/bunch/lot/shitload
- You brought too few/many
- I'll bring more/I'll take back the rest

Some of the educated Mag Leung can count, read and write. The royalty class maintain power by denying education to the lower classes. The guards can't count.

After reading this I went back to the battle scene in the throne room. I had not realized the king was dying there in the background. Missed that. Also, I think I am still having trouble figuring out how much time is going by between pages.

At first I was trying to simulate the time disorientation from being underground. I only talked about the time passed when they weren't underground. But it turns out that it's way too confusing so I'm making that timeline graphic now.

I know it's hard when we, as writers, are trying to convey the sense of disorientation to the reader. But I think we have to find some way to show the disorientation of the character without confusing the reader too.
