Essential continued to improve on Musashi's two-sword kenjutsu technique called niten'ichi. She had decades of "alone time" in her simulation program.

I'm going to try to post the next page later this week and also that new incentive page I promised you.

Impractical but sexy leather-bondage war-gear. Suspension of disbelief is nothing but pure awesomeness when one brings Edgar Rice Burroughs and Frank Frazetta into the picture. (Search your feelings, you know it to be true!)

I would like to sign up for a few years of sword training from Unity. I'd much rather have my ass kicked by her than the 65-year-old guy with bad teeth who is teaching me now.

i see here examples of two of my pet peeves when it comes to historical/medieval level of fighting, lack of armour(Armour is really very extremely you-would-have-to-be-insane-to-not-use-it useful) and two weapon fighting(which takes high levels of skill to make even remotely viable, it's a silly way of fighting, sword and shield is so much better it is not even a bad joke, 'tis just sad.)

She said that she is teaching the kenjutsu technique called "niten'ichi" ("two heavens as one") of Miyamoto Musashi (1584 – 1645). Musashi always taught using 2 long swords. Later, once the student learned using 2 long swords, they were taught to use both a large sword, and a "companion sword" at the same time, such as a katana with a wakizashi. I don't think Musashi ever used a shield.

As far as effectiveness, Musashi had an undefeated record in his 61 duels (next is 33 by Itō Ittōsai) using his duel sword technique.

Unity has already assessed the objective's situation as evidenced on page 387. This is a stealth operation and they do not expect to have to take on the entire Leung army.
Minor spoiler - Heavy armor and shields are going to be too constrictive in the underground tunnels of Durga Seung. Also they will be changing into light armor for the next chapter. This is just training with wooden swords.

yes, i know who the guy is, read the biographies and his book, he was also a badass that had no equal during his time, the methods used by him are.... questionable, he was good enough to make it work, as far as i know not many of the students have been.
armor? constrictive? bad armor is, yes.

one point i will give you is that she has not 'downloaded his skillz!' which would have been silly and instead set up a difficult target and trained for and against it, just find it difficult to believe that the counter was to use his own style against him.
i'll go into some more detail about dual wielding with robnot.

first off, I am a medieval/historical reenactor,, so any one who is NOT a knight had to buy their own armor, or loot it off the dead.. a simple chain shirt would cost a peasant 3 years wages..
an second,, most of our fighters use 2 weapons an are not formally trained ,, (an we just brought home the national war banner..) an officially if you have some thing in your second hand that's 2 weapon.. (have you ever been shield bashed??) even if you use it as a defense.. shields were for arrows an spears,, most heavy fighters just tie up each others shields an wrap shot each other...
also when we train with wood swords,, we use very little armor, (helm, elbow/wrist, an a cup.) if we get hit we want to know where, to train better at protecting that area.. an bruises do a fine job...

so you are saying you train with rattan weapons against each other without even a gambeson? you must be very careful.

on dual wield, personally i would not use two IDENTICAL<--- that bit is important as you well should know, weapons larger then large knives or maybe really small swords since i have neither the really impressive wrist strength it requires nor ambidexterity which certainly helps a lot, both of which can be overcome by ridiculous amounts of training, and there are plenty of people that have tested it, two arming swords? it's pretty much just a bad idea, sword and dagger? sure, sword and shield? awesome, cloak and dagger? actually works. and yes, i have been shield bashed, 'tis a glorious technique so often overlooked by fancypants.... and also an illegal move in most competition for obvious reasons.

seriously though, there are plenty of people that have tried it, and if you use two proper swords they just get in each others way... and you take up more space as your moves by necessity becomes larger which can be useful but mostly just makes you slower and in the way of friendlies.

i shall leave you with a youtube link to some people that are a hell of a lot better then me at explaining it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xc8akxwI56s

All very good points, and informative video.

As I said, Musashi's students only trained with 2 long swords, then once they mastered it, switched to katana with a wakizashi. The wakizashi isn't much longer than the dagger in the video.

Another minor spoiler - Liam will be switching to a katana and wakizashi after his training. They will both be wearing light armor, not heavy armor.

Also with European Style of sword fighting, a shield is part of the process. Japanese Sword fighting is all blade work for both attacking and defending. Hank Rhinehart in his book on swords goes into the whole Euro vs. Japenese styles of fighting.

all well and good for sword on sword and if I had to choose and incoming missiles weren't a threa, I'd favour a well balanced medium length blade in one hand and a recurved axe in the other for blocking..or a shield wall and spears, that seemed to work the best for most pre-medieval armies, but we must remember that in this setting, apparently grenades exist...for some ;) and as the samurai found out to their dismay and the european knight before them, firearms beat swords...particularly futuristic ones that can be aimed accurately, penetrate shields and armour and fire more than once before reloading
